General Education

"The purpose of general education at Santa Fe College is to foster a disciplined curiosity that leads to empowerment of the student as an intentional learner and to lay the foundation for lifelong learning. By exploring many aspects of the traditional arts and sciences, students ... learn about the human imagination and the products of cultural history and expression, the interrelationships within and among social and global communities, models that help to understand the patterns and behaviors of the natural world and social structures, and the values essential to local or global civic engagement. Specifically, students will encounter these ideas through courses in the sciences, mathematics, communications, the social sciences, and the arts and humanities.

While exploring these disciplines, students will also develop the college-level skills in communication, critical thinking, information literacy, scientific and quantitative reasoning, and global responsibility necessary for lifelong learning, whether it be within the academy or in the professional world. In this way, the College seeks not only to instill knowledge, but also to integrate skills and knowledge within the context of cultural and professional competencies."  (https://www.sfcollege.edu/academic-affairs/general-education/index)

The work presented here suggests the breadth of our General Education as well as our communications, critical thinking, and other skills.

From Early Modernity to Postmodernity: Ontological Transcendence in Shakespeare

An examination of Shakespearean characterization, particularly the characterization of Shakespeare’s greatest characters, is akin to raising a metaphorical looking-glass into the psyches of their own readerships. In order to do so accurately, one must examine the development and status of such a character throughout time as the post-modern Western world certainly views all of Shakespeare in a different light than did the 17th century British. Thus in order to understand Shakespeare’s two greatest feats of characterization, Hamlet from Hamlet, Prince of Denmark and Falstaff from King Henry IV and King Henry V, one must examine the developments of literary criticism which has elevated these two characters into the realm of the literary sublime.

Blaise Pascal

Blaise Pascal was a French mathematician, physicist, inventor, writer, and philosopher. He contributed greatly to physics, and he even gave him name to an unit of pressure, the Pascal. In mathematics, he invented a new form of proof, the induction method, particularly useful in Numbers Theory, and he developed the study of what we now call Pascal's triangle. This triangle is full of patterns, and can be used in a large variety of fields.

Chemistry: The Synthesis of Aspirin and its viability at the Santa Fe College Laboratories

The most common pain killer used today is Acetylsalicylic acid, commonly called aspirin. It is possible to synthesize aspirin using Salicylic acid and Acetic anhydride. There are two main objectives for this experiment: synthesize a sample of Acetylsalicylic acid, and analyse the sample obtained by measuring its melting temperature, and conduct a spectrophotometric analysis of it. This two objectives allow us to determine if the protocol used can be validated.

Statistics:  Comparison of Dog Lifespans

Studies have shown that small dogs tend to live longer than large dogs but is this a fact or a theory?  The objective of this study is to use statistical analysis to determine whether small dog breeds live longer than large dog breeds.

Global Responsibility

Public Education in Latin America

Latin American countries are performing at some of the worst educational levels around the world. This policy suggestion includes the history of public education in Latin America for historical context, the current statuses of the educational levels and programs available for Latin American countries, and my proposed solution to fix the education gap that has plagued the region for long enough. The ultimate goal is to close the education gap so that every person has an equal opportunity to learn and allow anyone going into the workforce to gain the skills needed to perform their jobs and by employing more people, allow the economy to grow significantly.
