SF2UF: Transfer Application Quick Guide

Who is Eligible to Transfer from SF to UF?

Eligible transfer applicants must be in good academic standing, must complete all major prerequisite courses before graduating from SF, and must graduate with an AA degree from SF.  (High School Dual Enrolled students who graduate with an SF AA degree do not complete a transfer application, but rather apply to UF as freshmen.)

When should I apply to UF?

Check the UF transfer applications deadline for your intended College at:  http://www.admissions.ufl.edu/ugrad/trappdates.html.  All applications materials and records must be received by the published deadline.

How do I know what prerequisite courses I need for my major?

  1. Ask your SF Academic Advisor for assistance.

  2. Ask a UF Advisor.  Check the Advisement Schedule on the SF UF Connect website (http://www.sfcollege.edu/gators/advisement/index) to see when a UF Advisor representing your College and Major will be on campus.

  3. Check your Degree Audit on eSantaFe.

  4. Refer to UF Undergraduate Catalog, https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/Pages/majors.aspx

Do I need to finish all my prerequisites before applying to UF?

While you do not need to finish all your prerequisites prior to applying for transfer, you should complete a majority of those courses in order to be the most competitive applicant possible. Some majors may require a specific number of transfer requirements be complete before applying.  Check with your advisor.

If you haven’t completed all your prerequisites, be sure to list them along with the anticipated month and year of completion in the section of the application.

Do I need to submit both SF and high school transcripts?

You must submit official transcripts from high school and all post-secondary institutions attended, regardless of length of attendance or credits earned. After you graduate from SF, you’ll need to send an updated transcript showing courses completed since your application and that you’ve earned your AA degree.

Do I need to submit SAT or ACT scores?

SAT / ACT scores are required only for students applying to College of Education teacher certification programs or to Rinker School of Construction Management programs.

UF Transfer Application: Statement of Intent aka The Essay Questions

The Prompts

  1. What are the core skills and knowledge you hope to acquire by completing a degree in this major and how do you plan to apply these when you graduate?

  2. Please provide any other information about yourself that you feel will help this college make an admission decision. This may include work, research, volunteer activities or other experiences pertaining to the degree program.

Our Tips

  • Prompt 1:  Be clear about your intended major: Alert the reader to your intended major in the first sentence of your personal statement.

  • Prompt 1:  Do your research:  Go to the major’s website and find out the core skills and knowledge required of graduates in this major.

  • Prompt 1:  Describe the connection between the learning outcomes for your major and your future academic or professional goals: For example, you could write about your choice of a biology major and your decision to pursue a career in biomedical research. How will majoring in X allow you to be successful in graduate or professional school or your career?  Details and support count.

  • Prompt 2:  Show motivation and dedication to your chosen major and profession: Describe what you gained from involvement in related work (volunteer or paid), internships, participation in student organizations, undergraduate research, Honors program, etc.  How will these activities help you succeed in your degree program and prepare you for your post-Bachelor’s degree goals?

  • Prompt 2:  Describe how you became interested in your major: Something, someone, or some experience must have inspired you to select your major and finish all the major prerequisites. Where does your interest in your major originate from?

  • Prompt 2:  Talk about why you specifically want to attend UF: Mention things that are relevant to the program – classes offered, faculty research interests, the ability to get involved in an organization, etc.  This is not the time to mention the football team or the fact that your parents or siblings attended the university (it just doesn’t set you apart today, sorry).

Do’s & Don’ts

Do:

  • Provide concrete examples that pertain to your life, goals and experiences.

  • Be concise. You only have 1000 characters for each essay.

  • Have someone look it over (professors, advisors, parents, the Honors Program Coordinator).

  • Go through the editing process and create multiple drafts.

Don’t:

  • Underestimate the importance of the personal statement.

  • Wait until the last minute and assume it will be easy to write.

  • Use clichés.

  • Make spelling and grammar mistakes.
